Tried the download - wont run on my PC - warning comes up from unknown source - ran it anyway and comes up wont run on this PC.
Windows live mail 2011 was a download from Microsoft when I first got the old Windows 7 computer so I assume, somewhere there is an wlsetup.exe file somewhere on it. can it not be installed from that ?

The problem with trying to install older Microsoft programs onto Window 10 machines is that, even if there are posts on the web stating that it worked for some people, it might not work for everyone. (There might be hardware issues or, for example, a Windows 10 update might prevent a successful installation working even though it would have been possible when Windows 10 first came out).

If you can find the original setup file on your old machine then, after copying it across on a USB memory stick (for example) you might be able to get it to run on your Windows 10 machine but, if the Softpedia download didn't work, I doubt that it will.

Using Thunderbird is a better option:

Why on earth are you trying to install an old program that is no longer supported or updated by Microsoft, particularly as it is a free program.

Take the hint and move on.

I use email a lot but use them via my browser, both gmail (from Google) and Outlook.com (from Microsoft) can be used via your browser.

The beauty of this is that all the files are stored on THEIR servers rather than on my PC, and it also means I can access my emails on my phone and tablet.

I also don't need any special software on my PC, just a browser.

It also means I can logon to my emails ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD where I have access to a browser and the internet.

Windows Live Mail 2011 is a dead end and if you put it on your new Windows 10 PC you are just using old technology.

Windows Live Mail does exactly what I need it to do - no less, no more. Windows 10 mail is rubbish. Will have a butchers at buenchicos thunderbird app.
