Problem Recording Ont To A Cd

I Have a pack of CDs and also a few odd ones. I use the ones from the pack to store work information, and have done so with the pc I am on. I wanted to download some vids on to the 'odd ones', and it recorded the first one but not the second. I tried it with one of the work ones, and also did not record. It is giving me a message that says 'does not use a format that Windows recognises'. How can I get round this (I have to do my tax in three weeks!).
