Software That Lets Me See A Preview Of Any Item On My Computer... ?

i am looking for some software that lets me see a preview of any item on my computer - at the moment i see preview of most images and some wordpad/notepad stuff - but thats it - i used to have a way to see PDFs but i can't remember how i did it.

basically I was to see everything - if possible

any ideas hows? Even if i need more than one type of software or whatever it takes

Everything is a big order. Different files need different interpretation of the data; a single viewer could not show all types. It'd be impractical, and would need continual updating every time some custom format was changed during an 'upgrade'.
