I'm trying to scan an A4 document on my wireless printer (HP Envy 4500 series) to my computer (Windows 10) as a jpg, but the print driver sees a square in the main body of the document and crops the rest.

Any idea how I stop this? Have tried the forums, downloaded HP printer assistant which allows you to specify "full scan area" as a preference, but none of this gets through to the printer.

Is Auto-crop any relation to Retro-cop?
Isn't there a 'Preview' option available before you scan? I've never encountered any scanner without one.

If there is such as an option, invoke it and then drag the borders of the scanned area to exactly where you want them to be.

My HP Envy 4500 is an all-in-one printer, Buenchico. I initiate the scan from the printer, choose the jpg rather than pdf option and press OK. I did find a preview option and the document displayed correctly.
Try using the HP Scan and Capture App:

Thanks, Buenchico. Will give it a go tomorrow.

I did that, Buenchico, and was able to initiate the scan from the desk top. So got the uncropped image. Thanks very much for your help.
