swopping a cd-rw for a dvd-rw
Been having problems trying to record cds for a while.
So I now need to get a new drive. Is it just a case of removing the cables from the cd drive for and connecting them to the dvd drive or is there more to it than that.
One of the reasons I'm asking is that on a customer feedback on ebuyer for the drive I'm thinking of buying the person states:-
"No doubt the moaners will argue that there are no case screws , and no CD Audio cable"
Just wondered what the cd audio cable was?
I also have a dvd read only drive fitted.
TIA
ps anyone know what might have caused the cd to go bang? There still appears to be power to the drive but it won't eject the cd that's still in there although it does appear to try. Tried the paperclip trick but that doesn't eject the cd.

Not sure if these are standard or not (feeling they might be). If they are, then you'll already have one with your current drive probably.
As for whether it's just a case of swapping cables over, that depends. Most drives at the moment are IDE based so would be compatible. If you buy a SATA one though, you will probably also need to buy a SATA controller.
It's pretty easy to put another Cd-rom/ dvd player etc.
But if you have more than one cd device in your machine, make sure you have one set as Manster and one as slave.
To do this, before sticking your new cd device in your computer, at the back of the Cd device, there is a switch, move it one way and it says Master, move it the other and it says slave.
Move your new Cd device to Master, and any other CD device in your machine as Slave.
Other than that, its a case of plugging the wires in, and playing it.
If it doesn't work, simply swap the master and slave buttons on both CD Devices
Maybe it had some really loud music on it!! Seriously though this appears to happen very occasionally and at random, it may have damaged the laser head anyway when the disc broke.
As xandx says set one to master and one to slave but it is usually not a switch but a clip-on link which you move from one position to the other.

the disc that shattered was 2nd hand and bought off ebay and it was the first time I tried to play it.
So if it wasn't goosed before the cd-rw is now. I certainly won't be trying any other cds. Besides I've only recovered about 150 of the 1000 pieces the rest must be still in there.
Thanks for the replies
