Has anyone experiance of "Acoustic Headphones" ? Them that purport to equalize noise so you do not hear it. Like in an aircraft? I see "Bose" are advertising this type at the moment, but at 249.00 a pair !!

Well I can't comment on the Bose headphones but I can tell you that the latest industrial ear defenders which use the same active equalizer technologie to try to cut out noise completely do work, I have used them standing next to rather large diesel generator's and when you first wear them (switched off to start) they sound just the same as normal defenders but then you switch them on and adjust the feedback and the noise just fades down to a background level which is easy to ignore.
As a pilot I've used the Bose system for a number of years. They all work very well... just as advertised. The early models tended to have short battery life. Friends that use the newer models say that has largely been overcome. I haven't tried the "civilian" model, but the Bose, and other aviaiton related companies such as David Clark are all exceptionally good for noise cancelling...
A work colleague of mine uses Bose noise-cancelling headphones at home and bores us all to tears by going on about how wonderful they are!
