My laptop needs a new hard drive, but before I go and buy one,I was hoping someone would be able to offer some advice. When I purchased my laptop (Acer Aspire1310) it did not come with a Windows disc, it came with a system disc, and 2 recovery discs, and it states in the instructions that the discs will only work with an Acer Laptop. If I fit a new hard drive, will I be able to use these discs to load Windows XP?The new hard drive I am going to purchase is made by Toshiba, and is the exact same model as my broken one.

It will work. It will not care about who made the hard disk.

The recovery disks do not actually INSTALL Windows in the conventional sense, they just put all the files back on the disk that you need, you reboot and voila, you have Windows (and probably lots of other software and drivers that originally came pre-installed on your laptop).

The reason they say it will only work in the Acer Aspire 1310 is that laptops often need special drivers for them to work (for the sound cards, graphics cards, and other internal components) and if you used these recovery disks on another PC or laptop the drivers would be wrong.
