We were bought a ‘meal experience’ as a present . It was yesterday. So we turn up and they want to see either driving license or passport as I.D. Yep a relaxing start! Then you have to walk thru a scanner, then put all your bags , phones etc on a convever belt and thru another scanner! It’s like being at the airport!
Then they take you up to top floor and sit you at the window (there is a bench/table round the entire room) so you’re actually sat next to each other looking out, and not sat opposite each other. The service is appalling. They ask if you’d like water. Ok yes pls. Then get a bill for £5 for it lol..... one , just one glass of wine was £15........the food was dire. Mainly cold. On the plus side the views were amazing lol.

Did you complain ?
Well security is very important.
Did you complain about the cold food?
I wouldn't complain about the security you have to go through.
There used to be a revolving restaurant at the top of the GPO Tower in central London. A young Greek Lad called Panos Kouparis took a photo of it just as the IRA detonated a large bomb in the restaurant. Front page on the Daily Mirror the next day. I don't think they re-opened the restaurant. :-(
In central London you can expect stringent security checks. Why wouldn't you?
So what happens if you innocently turn up with no photo ID. Strip & cavity search ?
I think this part should be clear when the "meal experience " is bought/booked.
And what sort of present results in addition costs for basic parts once there ? Isn't water and wine part of the paid for up front experience ?
Name and shame seems to be order of the day. I wasn't planning on buying one for anyone, but forewarned is forearmed.
The previous building on the site was demolished after extensive damage caused by a terrorist bomb.
Most places like that rest on the laurels of their views and the food tends to be mediocre in my opinion. Same with the Shard - I`d only ever go for a drink there and not eat.
According to the website, a bank card will suffice as ID:

If you were paying £15 for a (175ml) glass of wine, it suggests that you might have been drinking the Valpolicella:

which they can buy in at roughly the same price for a whole bottle as you paid for a glass

If you were having the set lunch though, you should have had a glass of plonk included in the deal:

In summary then, turning up at The Gherkin without suitable ID means you may not get into a pickle.
