How long does it usually take to unlock an old device?

I want to give my old handset to someone and have requested an unlock code from my provider. They said it could take up to 10 days! Surely that is too long but I don't know how it works. This is the first time I've asked for one.

Can vary. Going back some time it took an independent trader months to get info on an unlock code for a handset I had. Most are done on the spot because the code becomes common knowledge.
