Playing Cards With The Family, Is It A Thing Of The Past?

Whenever all our family get together we love to play cards together. , newmarket, chase the ace,cheat, sevens and very often Phase 10, which is a particular favourite. Does anyone else on here still play cards together? We dont play anything serious, just play cards for fun.

So now, sadly do you think its just a thing of the past and no one has any time for each other any more?

Card games only use to come out at family time or if on holiday for me when I was younger. I've not seen them in a while. I think the whole aspect of family time is ever so gradually becoming a thing of the past, with people finding their connections elsewhere including online. People aren't physically together as much in my opinion.

We used to, but 24 hour TV ended that !
My Mum used to go to Whist drives , but 24 / 7 TV ended that !

I've no family left now but we always enjoyed playing Canasta, one of the very few things my Dad would join in with :-)

As a family, we play cards a lot as well as all sorts of board games. We've just begun playing Backgammon with our two grandsons (age 11 and 9) and we taught them poker and pontoon from a young age and we even play these latter ones with money, albeit toy money with specimen written across the notes. Hope we're not leading them astray. Another popular game has been Yahtzee, again from a young age which helped enormously with multiplying and addition.

Yes, I too used to play cribbage with my dear old dad who sadly is no longer with us. Whenever I mention playing family card games like Newmarket for example, I am often met with blank faces of people who have no idea what I am talking about. I think its a shame really.

Phase 10, a boxed game is my favourite card game at the moment. Its a form of rummy.

As a small boy I started on Snap, then moved to Beggar My Neighbour. In the RAF we played Pontoon, Crib and Find the Lady (though our name for that is far too rude to print here). Later I moved on to Solo Whist and eventually Bridge. Haven't played cards in years.

Love a good game of cards, but usually with friends on holiday rather than at family dos. Uno, if we're feeling lazy.

Once spent nearly every afternoon of a weeks holiday to Montefrio (Spain) sat outside a bar eating tapas, drinking beer and playing cards. Bliss.

Haven’t played cards for ages. We used to like gin rummy, whist, hearts and sevens. I used to play a lot of patience.

Only at Xmas time with friends. We play chase the ace. Good fun. I do like card games, ought to play more often.

As a child we always played rummy as a family when visiting grandparents and as a teen we played Kaluki and poker all sat round the table on many an evening. In my 20s played a lot of bridge with friends but all we ever do now is play crib on holiday. I think today's kids might find cards boring - there are so many fancy games apps etc.

As a family, we never played cards. There was some unspoken rule about playing cards being somewhat 'dangerous' . I don't know how to play any of the card games mentioned here, except, Snap.

We did, however, play dominoes.
