With it plugged in and the battery on charge...... .remove the battery. Wait a few minutes and with everything still on.....put the battery back in.

What model of Lenovo is it?
Several Lenovo laptops have 2 batteries (one internal and one removable one), the ones I know are like that are the T series (T470, T480 and so on)
If one of the batteries fails you'll only get a approx 50% charge on the laptop.
My T470 has exactly that problem, my removable battery has failed and my charge only ever shows about 50%.
If you click on the battery icon on your taskbar (bottom right, down near the clock) if yours has two batteries you should be able to see, mine currently shows Battery 1 at 100% and battery 2 (the failed one) at 0%.
