When connected via HDMI to a TV, the TV only displays the "Booted up" screen but nothing else. It does not show any of the activity such as mouse movements (not the pointer either) or any application being opened. In fact, the boot-up includes a few short-cut icons which appear on-screen right at the end of the booting up sequence - they are absent on the TV. The TV seems to be getting the computer screen image as it appears up to near the end and then it is as if the computer is not providing HDMI output changes from then on. I have tried rebooting, same result.

Any suggestions as to what may be wrong ?

right click on homepage go to display settings and make sure its detecting the tv properly - you might need to look in advanced settings
Right click on a space on the desktop and choose Display Settings. It should show you a picture of two monitors. If you scroll down you should see a Multiple Displays sectoion. On the drop down does it say Extend deskjetop to this display? If you want to see the same thing on your laptop as is on your TV change it to Duplicate Display
