You'd have to choose a new username to re-register with Gmail, which would give you no access to your old account. You'd lose all of your old emails if you were only viewing them through a web browser but not if they're already in a dedicated email app (where they will have been downloaded to your computer or other device).

If you do end up seeking a new email account, I much prefer GMX to Gmail. (It's far more intuiitive for a start):
