Question Author
is there another way to transfer docs and photo's onto the new laptop.
USB is a standard, and a new stick should be compatible with any computer that has a USB port on it.

You may have to format the stick on your old computer before copying and plugging into your new computer.

Do you use Google Drive or Dropbox or any other file share service? As well as making it easy to transfer photos, music, documents it provides a back up service for them. Easy to do
i don't understand why the usb stick/old machine isn't compatible?
You could get a cable to connect the two computers USB ports and do it that way.

I solved the problem, sorry was being a bit thick. I didn't realise that the usb has a slide mechanism.
:D
There are several options depending on which version of Windows you are using, and how much data you want to transfer.
1. Email them to yourself. Zip the folder to reduce size.
2. Use a cloud service such as OneDrive.
3. Network your 2 computers using a Ethernet cable.
4. Write them to CD/DVD if you have a drive.

But the USB option should work.

A SMB transfer is the quickest and easiest way.

it doesn't want to play ball. I have a friend coming over tomorrow and will see if we solve the problem, she is quite tech savvy.

just as aside what sort of cable...
Question Author
ethernet cable does it have to be a certain type
There is only one type of ethernet. It would be far quicker, cheaper and simpler to use Dropbox or Google Drive. Every possible way of transferring files is explained here

Your USB stick should work, though.
Question Author
If you want to connect two USB ports you would need a USB to USB cable. I'm unsure whether computers recognise what you've done and work automatically, or not, though.

Also unsure why the USB doesn't work immediately. Have you tried formatting it as suggested ? Does the computer even recognise something's plugged in ?
Question Author
is that the type...
It won't work with a USB to USB. You would need ethernet or firewire.
Question Author
it does recognise its plugged in, but I am not savvy enough to work it out.
Question Author
the ethernet cable would that be the right one....
