Your sleeves or wrists not accidentally brushing the touchpad when typing? If so, disabling the touchpad is a possible solution.

Thank you SlackAlice No nothing was touching the touchpad and the touch pad isn't working. I wouldn't know how to disable it

Using a mouse mat or not?
I've got 2 wireless mice. Ones fine on any surface except glass the other panics on anything except a mouse mat.
Does it need charging? Have you anything in the vicinity that could be interfering such as other usb devices or even a plasma tv?
Ive had this when there was a strand of hair across the laser, flip the mouse over n see if one's there, just dangling over the tiny lens.
can happen as a result of a windows upgrade...
to resolve (it sounds drastic but it isn't)

microsoft windows key right click, if your cursor is not moving, move by your arrow keys up to device manager and right click. Move onto mice and other devices, enter that, you should see your mouse type, right click on that and uninstall.....YES. Your cursor won't work now.....

Then crash the computer, mine is by holding the off/on button down. Turn the pc back on and the mouse will reload and hopefully the problem is alleviated.

Thank you all for your help. It seems to have settled down now that I have it on a mouse mat but the touch pad isn't working.
>>> but the touch pad isn't working

Most laptops have a key that, when pressed together with 'Fn', toggles the touchpad on and off:
