I usually give things away, but this time someone said ‘Flog it on eBay, then give the money away.’

Here’s the reckoning.
Original cost £62.00
Sale price £30.00
Paypal fee -£1.17
Ebay fee - £3.00
Hermes - £6.00

Next time I’ll put it on Freebooters -less hassle!

Why are you whinging, you still cleared nearly £20?
It's £20 you wouldn't have had if you just give it away.
Why did you not ask the buyer to pay all or part of the cost of delivery?

Poor maths chum. I lost £42.

Whingeing? Mealy mouthed *** more like.

What is a Scotsman when he hurls his caber? A ***?
He's still a Scotsman.
// Poor maths chum. I lost £42.//

Well if you'd given it to freebooters you would have lost £62

the seller doesn't pay the postage. The buyer does.
It was second hand, you weren’t going to get the full £60 for it - you put sale price indicating that you wanted £30 for it. If we’re being pedantic you should have put ‘winning bid - £30’.
Wrong about who pays the postage .. whatever I sell I always pay the postage.
Have you never seen 'Free P&P' in a listing
Someone has to pay the postage and the way the OP is written the seller paid the postage.

I know some goods are offered with free p & p but that could be because that cost is included in the purchase price.
Exactly .. You set out your terms awhen you create the listing.
It might say 'free postage 'but the seller will have included it in the purchase price.

Hello Alava, Corby. You’re quite right, of course. Don’t know why I offered free postage; I might not again.

It wasn’t a complaint, though, just surprised at how it worked out!
allen - you learn as you go with eBay.

Next time, you will add a tenner to your lowest offer and whack the postage on, and come away with something wirthwhile
Allen what I maintain is that if you offer Free P&P you are more likely to get more bidders interested... and the more bidders interested, means you are far more likely to get a better price.

As a Marxian-educated economist, I should be better at capitalism, but I think I am too soft.

Flogged a car once, and the bloke offered £2200 - I haggled him down to two grand.

Don’t ask....

I always offer a free collection option for items where the postage would be over £5, and I usually get someone who lives within say 30 minutes who will buy and pick up.
Paypal is a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay.

Hans.

Yes, I knew about the eBay/Paypal link- which was one of the reasons why I was surprised by the Paypal 'fee' - just another snout in the trough!

After all, their only function in the process was to receive the £30 from the buyer into my account. Worth a fee?

(Yes I know it's in the small print somewhere, but it's still another snout).

A
