Norton is eating my computer

I've recently installed Norton 2006 on my computer and now it's crashing several times a day - with the message 'Symantec network proxy service has encountered a problem and needs to close'. I need to reboot each time. Is this a common problem? Is there any quick fix that doesn't require me to uninstall, or return to the shop and shoot someone?

Thanks in advance for any help; I may not be able to get online and acknowledge it. (I'm posting this from the office.)

I would unistall Norton then throw it away and use the free AVG antivirus from here: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 and the windows xp service pack 2 firewall (if you are running windows xp).
couldnt have put it better myself. Norton sucks, last year it infected my xp machine and i ad to reinstall the whole pc. AVG Anti Virus, is free and excellent. Get rid of the cack know as Norton's Anti Virus!

Yes I spent about 3 times a day trying to recover from the PC freezing. A message about ccapp not found. This turns out to be part of Norton Internet Security. Even when you remove all Norton products there are still bits lurking there causing problems. There is even a procedure telling you how to do it manually from Symantec. I now run AVG far better, my pc is faster. I do not know why this is free ?

The free one has less gizmos than the proffessional one you have to pay for. The site shows the differences.
