Sony Xperia Z3 Compact Phone - Needs Updating But How?

My phone has Android 5.0.2 but my wife's same model has Android 6.0.

She can download the covid certificate QR code on hers but I cannot - I' m told that it will only work on Andoid 6.0 at least. Now I am a complete beginner with these smart phones but it does say on Sony site that my phone can be upgraded.

I thought of buying another the same but when I look in specs of phones on ebay it says on most of them 4.0 or something and in brackets upgradable!

I am completely lost. How come my wife's same phone had 6.0 as it was a refurb like mine?

How much free memory has your phone got? If it's nearly full it can't update.

Don't waste your money buying another phone of the same model - it really is very old, first released 2014.

Have taken your advice and ordered the same Z3 model but not compact (it is only a little bigger)
I asked the seller to confirm as it just said Android in the listing but they confirmed it is indeed Android 7.0

Oh dear. There is no reason why you couldn't update the one you have if there is enough free memory. It is easy to do. Seems to me you've bought another very old phone. Android is up to 11 now
