When I try to install a new PC game I get this won't run message -- needs 256 color mode.
I've looked at the color settings but only 16 color shows up.
What do I do to find color 256 mode?

if you can right click on the icon for this game you should get a menu with option Properties on it.

When you select Properties you get a window with an option called Compatibility.

Select this then you can specify the compatibility mode, Windows 95, 98 etc.

You can also specify the display settings and it should offer 256 colours as one of the options.

256 color never shows - only 16 color

I don't seem to be able to find 'compatibility'

I think I'll donate to a charity shop
Thanks again for the advice
click START, click RUN, type REGEDIT, press F3, type WINDOWMETRICS

Edit the string value to 8 and save. (Remember that the default value is 32)

Don't make changes to your registry unless you back it up first and/or know what you're doing.
Hi all, please don't forget that the color mode available relates to the graphics card and driver installed, if it is an oldish pc with a basic VGA card it will only show 16 color mode. From the description that you give Grace it sounds to me like this is the problem and to be honest if that is the case and you want to play newer games then it is time to give your PC its last rites (r.i.p)
