Old Words Over-Ride Modern Technology.

The reference to speed dial in the Corrie thread got me ruminating on this. We still refer to dialling when few telephones have a dial these days. And "hang up" is another one dating from when the handset was hung on the base unit.

"Did you pull the chain" survived well beyond the introduction of modern toilet cisterns.

I'm sure there must be other examples. Any offers ?

We no longer put a hyphen in words like over-ride or to-day.

I was quietly delighted when I went to 'spend a penny' (now there's an old phrase for you!) in an Essex village hall loo a couple of years ago and found that there was still a chain that needed pulling. (I'm easily pleased!).

Most of us, I imagine, still use the word 'typing' when we are using a keyboard; however, using the word 'keyboarding" doesn't quite sound right.

Blueprint seems to be used a lot for anything that's at the planning stage.

Upper case and lower case are derived from the days when typesetters set type and the capital letters were in the upper case, and other letters were in the lower case. We still talk of 'filming' on a mobile phone, we have it 'on tape' when the recording device has no tape in it. We refer to 'footage' of moving pictures when there is no film in the camera.

I still 'tape' my fave TV shows, and i 'play records' without a record player.
