Transferring Files Via Usb

I've succeeded in setting up my new laptop (always used a desktop before, so it's a learning curve) and am now ready to start moving some files from the old PC. I found a USB flash drive which I thought had some pictures on it and tried inserting it in the PC to check, but it doesn't seem to show up anywhere. Where should I look? I thought it would be showing as a device in Computer (Windows 7) but no. It could be very old. I'd be grateful for any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong.
I've been advised by my very tech-savvy son in California to avoid a 3.0 USB and stick to a 2 so that it will work in both computers, The laptop is running Windows 10.

You tech-savvy son is misleading you; all USB 3.0 devices will work on a USB 2.0 socket, just at USB 2.0 speed.

To be fair, he did give me a link to one that will work. As he's a DSP engineer working for Apple, I tend to believe him.

I've solved the main part of my puzzle: I hadn't inserted the memory card from the camera into the USB... revisited a lot of very nice photos.

bhg is correct, the 3.0 USB is backwards compatible.
