My wife has just received a call on her infrequently used mobile from this number - 07376010242. The caller said they were speaking from the Fraud Department at Barclaycard Visa and they wanted to check whether she had authorised a payment of £600+ to a foreign country in the past fifteen minutes.

She immediately suspected a scam, told the caller so, and hung up. I've checked with the Fraud Department of Barclaycard and this call was indeed a scam.

Please be aware, just in case you are called.

It's a good idea to check with the card-provider. We had a similar call from Tesco credit card a few months ago; they had received a sale voucher for surf-board equipment and thought it might be fraudulent because we are pensioners. We dealt directly with the number on the credit card which resulted in the payment authorisation being refused and our credit card being cancelled and replaced.
i had a call from Amazon about a suspicious amount on my account, over a thousand pounds apparently, they said they were phoning me as it was a large amount and they were concerned. I hung up the phone and then dialled amazon, who said it wasn't them and to be careful, that it was obviously a scam...

Radio 4s Money Box program mentioned this type of scam last week.

If your wife had continued the call, she would have been advised that the bank had sent her a One Time Pass Code; and the scammers want her to enter the code on her phone.
By doing this the scammers would intercept this code, and use it to access her account.

Banks will never send you an unsolicited Pass Code – if you have not recently (within the last few minutes) made a card payment (which resulted in a request for you to enter a pass code), then such a request is a scam.
I had a very similar call. Always a good idea to check with your bank and report it.
