I am slowly but surely moving towards a new tv and am settling on the one i want but when it comes to 5.1 kits im kinda lost !

ideally i dont want one that runs thru a dvd player as basically i dont want a new dvd player ! are there any kits available that simply run via their own amp and if so are they any good ?

can anyone recommend a good kit for a budget of 500 or less ?

Yes, there are plenty of "amp only" options. Not ever having had that sort of cash to throw at an amp, I wouldn't like to recommend one - but you should be able to get something pretty good for 1/2 a grand.

I can't say that I can tell the difference, but most people recommend spending a reasonable proportion of your budget on high-quality cabling etc.

I bought an amp and speakers a couple of years ago from these people:

Then tend to deal in superceded stock so you can pick up units at less than half the price they were a few years back.

They do tend to be box shifters though so I wouldn't expect a great deal in customer service

PS Get a half decent sub-woofer it makes all the difference
I have a Sony 5.1system which I want to get rid of. It's as you describe i.e. seperate from the DVD player, it's pretty much an amplifier with Dolby and DTS.

I never use it and to be honest want rid of it, it's big enough that it would be a pain to sell it on e-bay, I have offered it to a friend and he was interested but seems to be dragging his heels.

So if you want it, live close(ish) to South East London and want to come and pick it up, it's yours (for free). It works fine, by the way. If your interested you can contact me via www.mysqldevelopment.com, there is a contact option on the site which if you email will get to me.

Oops sorry about my last answer. For £500 it is hard to find a suitable one thats actually last a life time.

The stuff on http://www.audioaffair.co.uk seems to be quite good.
