Solar Flare Communications

Having some trouble with mobile phone communications this evening.
Managed to reach my sister on a landline (eventually) but other calls to
mobiles seem to be impossible.
(no sound either way)
Also tried to reach a hospital department to rearrange a medical procedure but also no sound when connected.
manage to contact a work colleague via Whatsapp but not phone.

Heard something about a solar flare affecting telecommunications.
Any further info much appriciated

Biggest solar flare was probably 1858
when the telegraph lines across the mid west burned out
