Mrs K. harps back to the days when she had one & doesn't want to use a printer with her laptop.

I don't think they are manufactured any more, there are some available on eBay, but do you think it would be a risk buying a second-hand one?

Impossible to answer, but would it be a sensible thing to do?

Does anyone still use one?

Do you mean the word processor has a built in printer, a sort of advanced electronic typewriter?
In a soon to be paperless society it’s hard to understand the attraction but I guess there must still be a few kicking about on the second hand markets.

If you see one she likes and it’s not too much money, then there’s not a lot to lose but do just check that you can buy the ink ribbons for it before you press Buy.
The one I'm thinking of doesn't have a ribbon, it has a bubble jet printer, the Canon Starwriter.

barry, Yes, that's the one she used to have, there's one on eBay in original box with ink for 29 quid so I'll go for it & hope for the best.
Thanks.

Good luck, I'll be interested to know how you get on, we had one a lifetime ago
Just a thought, have you checked that you can still buy the ink for it?
Question Author
barry; I know nothing about them, I've just asked the seller if ink is with it & if it is still available. Do you know if it is in the form of a cartridge or a ribbon?
Cartridge

What model have you bought?
Question Author
I haven't bought it yet barry, it's a Typestar2, do you happen know if the cartridges are available (or fillable) ?
Question Author
^^ the seller says it is fully working but knows not about cartridges
That's a daisy wheel electronic typewriter with a ribbon, not the same as discussed earlier
I’ve had a search but can’t find any compatible cartridges online.

Thanks Maydup, though barry now says it's not a cartridge, ??
I don't want to buy it for her & find it's not usable after a short time.
It's been obsolete for years, I really would not rely on getting any peripherals that are still fit for purpose
I used to have one of the Canon models (possibly a Typestar). They worked well but cost a fortune in ribbons, as each ribbon could only be used once. (i.e. unlike a regular typewriter, where the ribbon simply reversed direction when it got to the end, the Canon ribbons had to be thrown away as soon as they'd been through the machine once).

I sold my Typestar (or whatever else it might have been called) many years ago, when I was really hard up. I remember thinking, just a few years later, that it had probably been a wise move, as the ribbons were no longer being manufactured then. As that was about a quarter of a century ago, I doubt very much that you'd be able to get hold of any now.
