I have been interested in you suggestion of NowTV and have done a little exploring an am quite fascinated.

If I paid monthy for the Sport BT channel and Sky sports, would this be live or streamed.........that is from an app on my laptop?.

Would that monthly payment also allow the sports channels mentioned to be watched on TV via Freeview?

To view Now TV services on a telly, rather than on (say) a computer or a phone, you need either a 'smart' (internet-enabled) TV set that's got the Now TV app on it (or which can have the app downloaded to it) or a suitable external device to plug into an HDMI socket on your telly.

The number of TVs that can have the app directly installed on them is currently fairly limited. (For example, it doesn't include any Panasonic or Toshiba models). So you'd probably need an external device, such as an Amazon Fire TV Stick or a Roku device.

Either of those devices will turn a 'non-smart' TV set into a 'smart' one (although, of course, they can also be used with TVs that are already 'smart'). You simply plug the device into an HDMI port, just as you would with a Sky box or DVD player, and ensure that your TV's source is set to display the signal from that port. The device then connects to your router, so that the content actually comes via the internet. (To switch to watching Freeview, you simply change the TVs 'source' setting back from 'HDMI' to 'DTV' or similar. It's just the same as switching from Sky to Freeview when you're using a Sky box. You obviously need a TV aerial for Freeview but you don't need it for Now TV).

Once you've got your telly displaying the output from your Amazon or Roku device, you use that device's remote control to select whichever app you want to use on it. That might be a free service, such as BBC iPlayer, or it could be a subscription one, such as Netflix or, in this case Now TV. Once you've selected the Now TV app, you again use the device's remote control to select the channel that you want to watch.
