Outrage - 57 Years Ago Today.

With so much outrage about in cyberspace these days, let's look at one "before internet".

On this day in 1965, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and George Harrison were invested with the MBE at Buckingham Palace.

Several OUTRAGED existing holders of MBE returned theirs in protest.

Canary; There's always been outrage, but before the internet it was confined to those who had telephones, or mates in the know. So the outrage wasn't widespread enough to infect nutters with knives or guns or smartphones.

John Lennon was later so outraged himself that he returned his MBE.

Evelyn Waugh turned down a CBE saying he shouldda been a Knight. Probably true. Mandarins ( the ones who choose and list silly!) have long memories and longer KNIIIIIIIVES !

For knighted doctors, their unadmiring colleagues ask: "which ministers bottom did you crawl up this year?" - you dont get one unless you are a govt axe-man.

I think it is a turn of phrase - drained of its colonial significance by the context ( ooo how sausuuuurian!)

do you say, oh I cant go to Cambridge because it has "bridge" in it which I think is cruel to ducks, but Oxford is OK because that is a 'ford' and not a bridge. Altho I know Oxford has some bridges, very green they are.
