When I got this new phone I was able to transfer my music ring tones from my PC by connecting a usb lead, As soon as I plugged it in a message came up on the phone something like MTP and I chose between transfer and charge. The sounds are now in my phone;s music file.

I have just tried to do this with my wife's new phone which is exactly the same model and nothing happens! I also tried my own again and the same.

What have I done wrong - is it something in the settings? Is there any other method of transfer?

THanks

Sorry, I missed a step: Try going into Settings >>> Notifications >>> App Settings >>> Messages Scroll down to "incoming messages" (This the step I missed ... continue to next step after this).

Have you tried a different USB lead? I believe that some leads are for charging only and don't allow data transfer.

No that does not make any difference. Have the correct lead and have just tried again to transfer a file. What happens is that it shows as copying for ages but all that happens is the phone charges up!

Somewhere there is an option to charge phone or copy but cannot find it

Have tried that but there is nothing like you said only such as bluetooth, restart, plane mode etc
Do what I do and use a programme called "Airdroid".
Install the app on the phone and go to http://web.airdroid.com/ on your laptop and you can transfer files to your laptop from your phone and vice versa - no need to connect with a cable, but I think both devices have to be connected to the same WiFi network.

It's quite easy to navigate once you've got the hang of it - I'm here if you download it and you have any problems with it :)

Thanks for that Gizmonster - I will try that this morning and come back to you

I meant to say OFFLINE not nor connected
Newer phone models don't seem to require the user to select a data transfer mode.

After making the USB connection, check that your phone is switched on and that its password (or facial recognition feature, etc) has been used in order to be able to fully access it.

Then go to 'This PC' on your computer, to look for an icon for your phone (which should be recognised as if it were an external hard drive). Double-clicking on that icon will then enable you to access all of the phone's folders. You can then move files to and from your phone, just as if it was a USB memory stick.

Thanks Buenchico
I did this and you are right the phone appeared in 'this PC' I clicked on the file in my docs and sent it to the phone.
Then all that happened was a block came up in blue saying 'copying' but it stayed like that for 5 mins and nothing happened. My phone is open
Thanks

Have you tried shutting down and restarting the PC? This article gives more suggestions, including details of how to set the USB mode to 'File Transfer':

Tried this link but still will not open the appropriate item in storage. In my older Xperia under storage there was an option charge or transfer

The nearest I have come is with the downloaded AirDroid which is now on my PC and Phone.
The file has transferred to AirDroid and is waiting with a little arrow yo transfer but phone icon is greyed out and says not connected!
Thanks

Once you've opened the app on your phone and you're on http://web.airdroid.com/ on your laptop, do you see all the icons called "photos" "camera" "call logs" etc??
If you want to transfer a photo, click on "photos". This will open a separate folder, click on "100ANDRO" (at least this is what it's called on my Xperia 10 III). If you're connected, all your photos should be visible. They all have a little white box in the top left hand corner that you can click on - select all the photos that you wish to download to your laptop and then press "download" in the top right hand corner of the folder.

If you can't see your photos, then something else is amiss .... which I'll try and help with if that's the case :)
If you want to transfer from your phone to the laptop, open up the folder where you want the file to go and click "upload". This will open up File Explorer so you can locate the file on your laptop and upload it to your phone.

Thanks for that saw the little icons photo etc but I am transferring MP4
Thanks
It's the same principle - open up the folder called "ringtones" (assuming you want to upload a ringtone from the laptop to your phone) and click "upload file". This will open up file explorer. Locate the file on your laptop and press "open" .... I haven't gone past this stage as I don't want to upload anything from my laptop, but I'm assuming this will upload the file into the folder called "ringtone".

Just out of curiosity, when you click on the icon called "photos" then c.lick on "100ANDRO", can you see the contents of your phone on your laptop? If you can, then you're obviously connected.
I've no idea as to why anyone should need to use specialised software. Simply dragging-&-dropping or copying-&-pasting, as with any other Windows file operation should be all that's needed.

If you're having problems, check that you're using the original USB lead that came with the phone (or, at least, a really good quality replacement for it), as cheap USB phone-to-PC leads are known to cause problems when transferring data. (I've got three leads that I can use with my phone. They'll all charge it perfectly well but the one I bought in a discount shop, for just a pound or two, refuses to transfer data).
//// I've no idea as to why anyone should need to use specialised software. ////
I use Airdroid because it removes the need for a lead.

Moggie, as Chris said, are you sure you're using the lead that came with your Xperia 10 IV?
I accidentally plugged the lead from my XA1 into my Xperia 10 III and it wouldn't transfer data. I thought my phone had developed a fault, until I eventually realised what I'd done and plugged the right lead in - problem sorted.
If you're only trying to move just a few files, rather than a vast number of them, a simple workaround for the problem is to email them to your own address using one device and then to access them from your email account using the other one.
