signifance PC numbers on memory

I ordered a 256MB DDR PC2100 and have been sent one which is marked PC3200. Should I return it? What do those figures mean?

Confab

PC3200 is a faster type or RAM and often backward compatible with PC2100. If you have more than one type of RAM installed in on your motherboard then your computer will run at the slower speed as default (in your case both willrun at 2100). If you are replacing your existing PC2100 then your computer may utilise the faster speed of PC3200 only if your motherboard supports it. The best thing to do is install it and if it works fine - If not sent it back.

Thanks,confab. Checking the spec of my motherboard, it appears not to support 3200 so I'l send it back.

As confab said,it is probably backward compatible, so try it before you go to the expense of sending it back.
