I seem still to have a problem with these things on the computer, even after trying Norton, and Hitmanpro (which cleared a lot of other malicious stuff from what was a very sick computer). The only info I can find about Batserv and VXGame by doing a Google search seems to be in German - and I don't understand it.

Can anybody give me an idea of how to purge the comptuer of these things? And perhaps indicate what the effect of having them on there is likely to be?

Download and install CWS shredder from here http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

Also Ad-Aware from here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Both are free and very good

Also run the free virus scan from here http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

You may need to stop system restore and delete your restore points as viruses cannot be removed from the restore folder on you PC as its "locked" by windows.

You may also need to run all the removal programs in safe mode as this sometimes works better than in normal mode.

The online scan can't be run in safe mode though

Thanks, Confab. CWShredder and Ad-Aware are part of the HitmanPro2 package, so I've already used them. Will certainly have a go at Housecall, though.
