I play mp3 music stored on my laptop through my hi-fi speakers. The jack plug connects the hi-fi to the laptop via it's headphone socket; but when I try to do something else on the laptop while listening to music the sound jumps every time I click the mouse. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can cure it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You must be working at the limits of capability of your processor. In order to play the music and respond to user requests, your computer has to multi-task. In reality, a single processor can only give the impression of this. The processor actually shares its time rapidly back and forth between all active tasks and temporarily stops one to do another. The faster the processor, the less noticeable the switches between tasks. Some tasks have a higher priority than others and will be more likely to interrupt the music (eg saving a file). The solution is to close all unneccesary tasks running on your computer, or upgrate to a faster processor.
