Grotesque

Sans serif is a typeface without serifs - those little pieces which stick out at the ends of the letters. This typeface in which I am typing (Arial) is a sans face.

If you pick out Times Roman in your typeface list you will see the difference.

A well known sans face before computers took over was Gill Sans produced by Eric Gill, designer and sculptor, but unfortunately has been replaced by this (also called Univers).

A serif face is easier on the eye when reading a large amount of matter such as books.
