For your problem windows would by default have an entry that tells it to use windows media player for that type of media file, something has changed this maybe another media program such as winamp or real player or whatever?
If you are unsure how to correct this I suggest that the easiest way would be to reinstall the latest version of windows media player, you can download this from microsoft for free, use version 9 for win98 or ME or 2000 use version 10 for XP.
