On This Day In History..... 2001
Islamic nation dragged itself kicking and screaming into the 7th century. The Grand National Assembly of Turkey ratified changes to the country's legal code that made women equal to men before the law and no longer subject to their husbands. Bet that's cheered you up eh girls!

It might well be that some women were able to open an account in their name without any additional requirements but the 1975 Sex Discrimination Act outlawed discrimination in various matters including banking.
"29 Discrimination in provision of goods, facilities or services
(1) It is unlawful for any person concerned with the provision (for payment or not) of goods, facilities or services to the public or a section of the public to discriminate against a woman who seeks to obtain or use those goods, facilities or services—
(a) by refusing or deliberately omitting to provide her with any of them, or
(b) by refusing or deliberately omitting to provide her with goods, facilities or services of the like quality, in the like manner and on the like terms as are normal in his case in relation to male members of the public or (where she belongs to a section of the public) to male members of that section.
(2) The following are examples of the facilities and services mentioned in subsection (1)—

Wow. Just wow.
We weren’t far in front of Islamic countries with regards to women’s rights? Is that what you’re claiming?
OK. Where to start. Oh, I don’t know… let’s start with property rights. A woman could own her own property without the involvement of a man in 1870. Equal pay? 1970. Divorce their husbands? 1857.
I could go on. However, now let’s look at Islam with regards to women’s rights. Oh, that’s right. They barely have any whatsoever. They’re routinely stoned to death for alleged adultery in some Islamic countries. Meaning that they’re buried up to the neck in the ground and then men throw large stones at their heads until they’re dead. Lovely eh? Many women in Islamic societies cannot even leave their own house without a male chaperone. They’re forced to cover themselves from head to toe in dark garb when in public. Why? To prevent themselves from being raped. Because rape, in Islam, is the woman’s fault you see. So let’s talk about rape. Now, I know that the conviction rate for rape in the UK and other western countries is low but at least we have an actual conviction rate. In many Islamic countries, there is no rape at all. Well, no recorded rape at least. They just don’t bother recording the crime and hey presto: zero rape statistics! Genius. Who knew that if you fail to record crime, no recorded crime exists? And as for those Islamic countries that do accept that rape of women in their society happens, many of them require at least four witnesses to even begin an investigation. Needless to say, recorded rape in the Islamic world is very low… I wonder why?
And yet, knowing all this (giving you the benefit of the doubt), are you seriously suggesting that the rights women in the ‘West’ enjoy are only just a few short years away from those practiced in Islamic nations?
Surely, you cannot be that naive and/or stupid?
