laptop internet slowing down

over the past few days my internet has been taking up to a minute to change pages. it used to be about 3-5 seconds.

my laptop is 18GB (13GBfree), 1GB and 500mhz

i have done all sorts of clean ups and defragged, theres no virus or spyware, and have a firewall

when i click the task bar icon it says --

aol dial on demand feature please do not delete, disconnected, fire walled

local area connection, network cable is unplugged, 3com10/100 mini pci ethernet adapter

1394 connection, connected, firewalled, 1394 net adapter

so what could this be? any ideas of what i can do?

any idea how to find it then? can you recommend some software that'll get it? free preferably as i have already paid for a few.
