Enigmatic Variations N0 1636 - Mislaid By Luxor
Good evening, a tricky looking offering fromLUXOR for which I would appreciate some help. Many thanks in advance!
( Seven answers are shorter than the space available and must be entered with a gap of several consecutive cells. Each gap indicates the location of an item which has been MISLAID. Solvers must complete the entries by adding the missing items, always making real words or names. Numbers in brackets refer to grid spaces and Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended. )

You mentioned 'help' - so here are some hints.
1 D. A four letter word meaning to 'scrutinise' (read, check over etc) has the usual 'last letter' and the usual 'ring' inside. It's an odd-looking word, means a line of verse.
30 D. I am almost certain your U is wrong. (
40 Another word for 'cream', colour (think wedding dresses!). The 'Welsh engine' is beloved by children, a four letter-name, followed by the usual 'yard'.
44 The usual three letter 'trouble' is reversed inside the outer letters of 'gaol'.
PS You might bump into the theme as your grid fills up, the gaps filled themselves at times.
2 D Slightly tricky, and a new phrase for me. The first word, a short word, of the answer is given in the clue. Then take the 'capital of Latvia' and swap the first letter of government' for Vote (you've got that).
43 The answer often crops up in crosswords - a musical composition for nine, I'm sure you know it.
Good morning, many thanks for the helpful and comprehensive hints, NACW and Newmodarmy! Just a confirmation for 2d ( in rixa ) and 26d ( genuses ).
I’m still looking at 1d, I’ve got scan plus the o and the n, but fear that my answer for scrutinise may be wrong. I’m working patiently on this one though it may appear Matakari-friendly…
I am seeking learning hints again for the following, and hopefully I’ll get a glimpse of the thematic bit, thanks!
21a Person in human resources produces sharpener ( 8 ) : H?N?????
26a Flowers come with litre base included ( 6 ) : C?A?M?
31a Delivered guided missile launcher to front ( 9 ) : ?O?L????D
34a Pressure in Grammar School computing tests ( 8 ) : PEG????I
46a Foolishly swats round first of insects in frenzy ( 6 ) : ???W?S
24d Swimmers sploshing about, not posh ( 8 ) : LE??INGS
Thanks, Matakari. Four of those clues are thematic... 21, 31 and 34 A and 24 D. Your A in 26 A is wrong, as is your I in 34 A.
46 A is simply an anagram - leading to a new-to-me word that is in Chambers.
21 A. Simply Human Resources abbreviation with the usual three-letter 'person' inside. This will give you a 'sharpener', a tool say.
34 Is a five word for ' computer tests' - just the Pressure abbreviation then 'in Grammar school' indicates the last four letters.
The 34 A entry should give you some idea of what the thematic element, inserted into the word, is.
