I would hope the PS3 will bury it as it is a serious advance in the way computers work. It could have repercussions for all platforms in the future. And it's going to support Blu-ray which is a superior technology to HD-DVD.
So, in my eyes, the PS3 will be the better console.
The reason MS rushed it out is to get a foothold in the market and I suspect they will if they get their supply chain problems sorted out. I don't think it will be enough to shift Sony's position as leader though.

Sony have done the same sort of thing twice, both time times Sega (first, the Saturn and the PS1. second the PS2 and the Dreamcast). Both times, Sony released later, and won.
Though it'll be harder for them to knock out Microsoft. They pretty much have an infinite pile of cash to throw at the marketing side of the 360 operation.
