Enigmatic Variations N0.1660 By Arcadia
Good evening, seeking help with the following to get me along, thanks!
10a Preys upon tea plant in clumps of prairie trees ( 8 ) : ????RA??
33a Grocer’s apostrophe, for example, acceptable in absence of good English ( 7 ) : A?????E
3d Holding back from winning work in pugilism ( 6 ) : ???S??
22d Wrongly views failures involving minimum of effort ( 7 ) : ?I?????
25d Herbivore, say tethered by ancient stake ( 5 ) : ????E
PREAMBLE: Three unclued entries comprise two contributors in contention as to which takes precedence over each other and a third in a BORDER DISPUTE. Entries for the two contenders initially give rise to a DISPUTE in four cells, which must be resolved by them entirely adjusting their relative positions, in the process creating new words. Solvers must highlight two words, totalling ten letters, which describe the BORDER. Chambers Dictionary ( 2016 ) is recommended.

1a Comprehend Spenserian impression leaving mark on spelling ( 7 ) : ?N?RA??
31 Roughly shapes lead-free kilns ( 5 ) : E???S
7d Extremely saggy holding stomach in with bands ( 7 ) : ?TY??E?
16d Village perhaps stopping onset of buboes rocketing ( 4 ) : ???M
18d Exposed cheat having last bit of the other ( 4 ) : E???
This is the last batch that is worrying me. Thanks for answers and I’ll check for the parsing!
24a Pickpocket cases Republican Club ( 6 ) : ?R?VER
29a Word left on Rob Roy’s release ( 6 ) : LE?E?E
35a Old- timer’s certainly contributing to birthday wishes (4 ) : ???S
9d Girl removing depth charge from shell of boat ( 6 ) : T??AD?
27d Are Young Conservatives involved in move on Perth business trainee? ( 6 ): ?A??E?
And I seek confirmation for the letters in the three unclued entries:
CA?PBERRR?A?
EL?T?ED?Y?AM
CL?S?ICS???E
Thanks, NACW, I'm learning much from this one. Could you tell me which letters are incorrect in the first two unclued entries? And I'm not too sure about the parsing for this one:
30 Stroke Association probes chronic fatigue syndrome: MA?S?
( MASSE ) I see the first word of the clue, but cannot account for the chronic fatigue syndrome bit.
Thanks, Matakari - and sorry if I sounded exasperated in my last post! I'm just puzzled at times - you solve Mephisto, week after week and that has some really tough clues, definitely tougher than many you've sought help with today!
ME is the abbreviation that;s often used instead of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Google ME, it'll save me trying to spell the long version.
I'll have another look at your suggested letters for the unclued entries. The thematic stuff meant that entries were changed, so I will have to work backwards...
Matakari, your E at the start of the middle Unclued entry is wrong. Although I said that some of your letters were wrong, I realise now that I should have reminded you that there are 'disputes' (clashes) in four cells. You said earlier that you have a good idea of the first two unclued entries, so you probably have a good idea how to fill them (another big hint!)
