what is the purpose of a cache memory?

having information stored in the cache allows your computer to retrieve the information more quickly than if it were to retrieve the information from the original source. an example is your internet cache. instead of downloading all of the pictures, style sheets and so on from a website, your computer will retrieve them from a folder on your computer where it is stored to save time and bandwidth.
