We can't yet find an anti-virus that is compatible with our system. Until we do how safe are we on the internet if we stick with sites we know and only open e-mails from recognised addresses?

You can get by without a a/v but you need a firewall. Windows XP comes with one build in. If you use AOL broadband you can download one for free. Also do a goole search for Highjackthis which is a prograame that can get rid of a lot of the nasties that the other a/vs can't
You say you can't get one for your system, what is your system? I'd be suprised if you couldn't get one because there are loads.

Is it a Mac ? if so you don't really need one.

If you stick to known internet sites and only open emails from people you know you should be OK, but some virus attack peoples email boxes and therefore you could get an email with a virus which comes from somebody you know.
Which anti-virus programs have you tried?

We've tried McAfee and Norton and another one i can't remember. They work OK at first and then start treating our programmes as viruses and the computer won't open, also treat hotmail as a virus. We do have firewall and e-mail scan in place. We have Windows XP and are on AOL Broadband.
Do try the free AVG (you can always pay for an advanced version later). Also look for Bit Defender, there should be a free version and there is the latest on Personal Computer World magazine this month. There are plenty of other free ones out there.
Try Avast Anti virus (Free edition). That will work on any system.By the way,if you can`t get a virus system to work on your PC,maybe viruses won`t be able to infect you anyway:-)
I should have stated,I too have Windows xp (professional) and AOL Broadband:-)
