Why isn't saving a file to CD or DVD as simple as it si saving to a floppy disc

because the way it writes to the cd/dvd is different, you will need a cd/dvd writer (DVD roms tend to be cd writers anyway)

Sorry if you wanted a more technical answer but if you use xp it is very easy to put a file on a cd.. just right click then choose send to --> your cd-rw drive then follow the wizard. It mat not be as easy as using a floppy but it is a hell of a lot more reliable. You could always get yourself a usb media stick which are just as easy as using a floppy just plug an play.

Disks have to be formatted before they can be used for 'drag and drop' storage. Your hard drive was formatted before your operating system was installed. Floppy disks come pre-formatted because the only thing which people normally use them for is 'drag and drop' file storage.

CDs and DVDs don't come pre-formatted for this type of file storage because many people will want to use the disks for other uses (e.g. as audio CDs). If you simply use the 'format rewriteable disk' option within the disk burning software (while using a CD-RW disk, of course, - not CD-R), you'll create a disk which can be used exactly like a 'giant floppy'.
