Faulty mouse and/or keyboard is the most likly problem. The lifespan of a pc mouse is anything between 3 & 18 months but I have had one that packed up after 6 days.

I had this problem on a previous computer. I have no idea what caused it but a quicker cure was to unplug the mouse from the back of the computer and then plug it in after about 5 seconds. Faster than re-booting. Possibly caused by static build up?

try removing the ball in the mouse and cleaning it and the 3 rollers inside the mouse - they may be caked in sticky grime - just scrape it off with a cotton bud - or fingernail - don't forget to wash your hands afterwards though ;o)

Do not follow gen2s advice if it is a ps2 fitting as these are not hot-swappable, only do so if it is USB.

If it is the old-fashioned type with a ball, follow jokos advice, if it is a modern optical advice it is probably corrupted drivers.

I have even found updating the graphics card drivers can resolve some optical mouse problems.
