Cold Water Tank Update

Thanks for the answers to my question dated 19/01/06. Several questions were asked in the answers so here are the answers:-

1) I live in a house less than 6 years old.

2) There is one tank in the loft.

3) I have a Albion Mainslow Thermal Store Unit MF 25/140 which stores hot water and the central heating system which is below the loft water tank.

4) There has been no plumbing work since I'veown the property

If its an easy porblem to solve can I do this myself or will I need to call a plumber and or heating engineer?.

andyjc, From the information you've provided, I would suggest that you contact a heating engineer who is conversant with Thermal Storage Units. These units are more complicated than normal central heating systems. It is possible that one of the coils in the cylinder has developed a small leakage.

This makes things clearer. As someone conversant with thermal store systems and assuming this is an open vented system your overflow problem is most likely only due to too high a water level in the tank.

This tank is probably the make up or expansion tank and the cold level needs adjusting to be near the bottom to allow for the much larger water expansion in the thermal store without overflowing. Sometimes a standard tank is not big enough.

Your hot water is mains fed through a heat exchanger so it is not affected by the expansion tank. This doesn't rule out a mains back leak in to the tank as EI pointed out but I reckon it's just the tank water level too high.

BUt stanleyman, If there is only one tank in the loft then surely it must be the cold water storage tank ??

btw, I checked out the situation and you definately can't get here with a car transporter across 1500 miles of open ocean.

qapmoc there is no water storage, hot water is direct off the mains through a heat exchanger, the tank is for fill and expansion if this an open vented thermal store.

I can go overland if I only knew where you where, Africa was last mentioned? I want to get them shifted soon as there is oil dripping all over the place!

You can't go overland to here from anywhere, the 1500 miles (I just checked this and it is actually 1240miles) is the least distance from here to the African mainland. In fact it is the least distance to any continent.
