Cleaning up my desktop

I've got lots of shortcuts on the desktop - how do i get rid of them without deleting the actual files?

right click on each and delete. This will only remove the shortcut. You can create it again in the future should you wish to.
And if you're using XP, you should have an icon called Unused Desktop Shortcuts - you can just drag 'n drop them in there. Then, when you want to use one, just click on that icon and you can get at any that you've put in there.
i would follow snooks suggestion.you should never delete a shortcut without also removing the program.inevitably your pc will become congested with stuff you forgot you had.

I find it easiest to create folders with different names like technical, games, music etc and just have those on the desktop. Then, when I get a new shortcut I put it in the appropriate folder. This keeps the whole screen looking neat and tidy.

To keep my desktop tidy I right click anywhere on the desktop then choose new folder, right click on the new folder and then choose rename, type in the box that says new folder "spare icons."


Then drag all the icons you don't use very often into the "spare icons" folder you have just created.


Do not just delete all your icons to get rid of them!
