1000 bytes = 1 kilobyte 1000 kilobytes = 1 megabyte 1000 megabytes = 1 gigabyte 1000 gigabytes = 1 terabyte
the fugure to use is 1024 to be precise - it makes a big difference when doing calculations although 1000 is a good rule of thumb.

1 Bit is a 1 or 0 in computer memory
8 bits make 1 Byte
1024 Bytes make 1 Kilobyte
1024 KilBytes make 1 Megabyte
1024 Megabytes make 1 Gigabyte
1024 MGigabytes makes 1 Terabyte
1024 Terabytes makes 1 Petabyte - I think, not sureon this one

Looking at it another way, 1 byte is one character so the word "hello" would take up 5 bytes.
rekstout: Kilo > Mega > Giga > Tera > Peta > Exa
also, given the use of Unicode nowadays instead of ASCII, "hello" would use up 10 bytes, and not 5 as mentioned.
