Folder views keep changing

How can I make the folders on my desktop maintain the same views? I like them showing icons, and without the folder sidebar open, but they seem determined to show a list instead, with a sidebar.

For about the nth time, I tried Tools, then Folder Options, then View, then Apply to all Folders, which does (for a change) seem to keep the icons intact, but there's still the Folders sidebar open.

How can I get it to go away? Anyone know? Or is it set to be visible by default?

Thanks for your help.

You are close but not close enough.

When you open Folder Options, stay on the General tab and in the Tasks section (the first one) select "Use Windows Classic Folders" then click Apply and OK.

Hi Geoff, thanks for that, but I've already got it set to 'Use Classic Windows Folders'. I even went back in and changed it to 'common tasks, applied it and okayed it, then closed the window, reopened it and set it back to classic folders, then set it up the way I want it. Next time I opened it, it's back the way it was. No difference! Still the sidebar. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Or do I just have to accept that the sidebar is always there unless I close it down?

Not sure why it does not work, I have it set for Classic Folders and it stays that way?!? No common tasks bar.

Only thing I can think of (and it is probably a long shot), on the View tab do you have "remember each folders view settings" ticked (checked) before you click Apply and Apply to All?

Geoff, I already (some time ago) checked that option, but I just unchecked it and rechecked it and clicked Apply, but it still doesn't take effect. Unless anyone has a clue why this is happening I'm gonna have to just accept that the sidebar pops up all the time I suppose (well, I've put up with it long enough so I suppose I can live with it). Thanks for your suggestion all the same, Geoff.
It may be a bit drastic but if you go to Control Panel then System, Advanced and Performance then under visual effects etc. Choose settings and 'Adjust for best performance' this gets rid of the side bar but the system then looks a bit like Windows 98 !!! (I would have thought that you could click on Custom and then pick tthe bits you want?). Hope that helps.
