MS Word weird icons!

Hi all - I use word as my email editor in outlook 2003. Dont ask me how i done it, but i now have weird symbols in it. There are dots where the spaces are, and like a 'backwards' 'P' at line breaks. How can i turn this off? Thanks. PM.

On the word toolbar there is the same 'backwards P' that swaps between ordinary appearance and these weird symbols. Can you access that toolbar when you are using outlook 2003?

On the Word toolbar there is a show/hide button for the backwards P. It may be hidden but it will be there somewhere just expand the toolbar more icons arrow. I suspect the button is set to show?
