boys voice breaking

Hi, this might sound a bit silly (because I am a reasonably intelligent woman) but I have a 9 year old son and we were talking the other day about changes that he will be going through at puberty and was talking about his voice breaking (though to be honest he doesn't belive me lol) when I reealised that I dont actually know what age it happens at! I know it's different for most boys, but does anyone know roughly how old he will be when it happens?

My son is 13, his voice started breaking when he was 11,(It was funny....bless). I supose the next step for me will be smelly feet and armpits!!!. Not got to that stage yet, he's still sweet.

Thanks Pam, even though I dont want him to grow up, I'm actually quite looking forward to it :-) I think it will be strange though

I'd say 11 is slightly on the young side of average. My brother was about 15 when his broke, though it did it very gradually and never 'cracked', but he was a fairly late developer. Average age for voice to start changing is 13-14 and it usually occurs after pubic hair starts to grow.

My son was actually 11 also when he became a bit squeaky! It was funny but sad at the same time ! He finally became totally lower by the age of 13.

The kids I teach tend to have slightly lower voices in year 8/9 and by year 10 they are properly low.
