Hi,

i purchased a wireless adsl router kit. now to me it seems obvious that if i want wireless internet then this is what i should have...

but during the set up, the thing is insistent that i need to have a ethernet cable connected to the router from my desktop pc

the prob is that my pc is upstairs and the router is downstairs..the whole point was to get rid of the wires...

so is there anything anyone can suggest?

is it really necessary to have the ethernet connection?

no, not at all.

you need to connect your adsl modem to the router with an ethernet cable. or, if your router has a modem built-in, then just connect the router+modem box straight to the phone line.

assuming you have set up the wireless dongle or card on your computer upstairs, it should detect the wireless network when you turn it on. then its just a case of following the router's instructions (probably going to 192.168.2.1 or similar within internet explorer), and setting up your network to connect to your ISP.

Some routers are "wired" initially so you can configure them, check the instructions just to make sure.

Also make sure that you don't go out of the wireless range, which is reduced with the setup you described.

The antenna is small (high freq) and tx power is low on these devices.

As soapbox says you might need to set it up via a cable first, this will allow you to set up the wireless settings.
