computer freezing

Could anybody help with suggestions as to why my PC freezes for approx 10 secs at random times.

Sometimes it will be 8 times in an hour, other times it will only freeze once. This seems to be irrelevant as to how many windows I have open, as I have experimented with different numbers.
This doesn't sound like a long time, but is REALLY annoying after a while.
I have run all virus scans, and have up to date virus and spyware software installed

Thanks in advance

Do you have a lot of "background" tasks running at the same time?

What op system are you running?

Also, is your computer in a cold enviroment, as this could also affect the Hard Drive speeds so i am aware.
